Policy Engagement

Welcome! I am an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I am also faculty affiliate at Stanford's Immigration Policy Lab (IPL) and New York University’s Center for Social Media and Politics (CSMaP), as well as a member of EGAP.

My research uses original datasets of hundreds of millions of social media posts, text and network analysis, machine learning methods, and experiments to study mass and elite political behavior in the Arab World and other comparative contexts.

I use these tools to explore drivers and mitigators of intergroup conflict and intolerance, consequences of repression, and digital dimensions of conflict—including the spread of online hate speech, extremism, and disinformation. My work has been published in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, World Politics, Political Communication, and the Quarterly Journal of Political Science. My work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation.

I received my PhD in Political Science from NYU in 2018. I am a former non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institute, former Junior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and former CASA Fellow at the American University in Cairo. I hold a Bachelor’s in International Relations and Arabic from Tufts University.

On this website, you will find links to my CV, publications, and working papers. Please do not hesitate to contact me at alexandra.siegel@colorado.edu with any questions or to request copies of my work.
